It is important to have good leadership and management skills. Having this will have a positive effect on the delivery of services that is being provided. When reading about leadership styles, democratic leadership style best fits me. According to the text, “democratic leadership treat followers as fully capable of doing work on their own.” (Northouse, 2018). I believe each individual thrive differently, so it is important to listen, support, guide and encourage others as well as communicate effectively in order to have a positive outcome.
The assessment tools I completed includes: Leadership Strength, Leadership Skills, Leadership Vision and Leadership Task and Relationship. In completing Leadership strength, it was determined that my highest strength lies with being analytic and being a mediator. I scored (28) in both areas. In the middle I scored (25) which is being the encourager and innovator and (26) my lowest which is implementer. By participating in this questionnaire, I am able to see the areas I have my greatest strengths and the areas where I have the weakest strength. According to the text, Identifying individual strengths is a unique challenge because people often feel hesitant and inhibited about acknowledging positive aspects of themselves.” (Northouse, 2018).
In completing the Leadership skills questionnaire, it was determined that my strongest skill is democratic. I scored a (23) which is the highest score. I scored (17) on authoritarian skill. According to the text, “authoritarian style of leadership in which leaders perceive subordinates as needing direction.” (Northouse, 2018). and (14) on Laisses-Faire. According to the text, “laisses-faire sometimes labelled non leadership in which leaders ignore workers and their motivation and engage in minimal influence.” (Northouse, 2018).
Leadership vision is another questionnaire that I completed. This questionnaire is about a leader having a vision for a group or organization. According to the text, “A competent leader will have a compelling vision that challenges people to work toward a higher standard of excellence.” (Northouse, 2018). After completing the questionnaire, it was determined that my vision ability is high. I scored a (41) on this questionnaire. Leadership implement the vision; they motivate and inspire others to achieve it.
Lastly, I completed the task and relationship questionnaire. This questionnaire focused on measuring task oriented and relationship-oriented leadership. According to the text, “task leadership behaviors facilitate goal accomplishment- they are behaviors that help group members to achieve their objectives.” (Northouse, 2018). It was determined that I focused and was dominant in my task goals vs relationship goals. For my task score, I scored (64) and for my relationship score, I scored (24). With my task score being high, it showed that I pay more attention to accomplishing my goals rather than dealing with people.
The Task and Relationship is what I chose to discuss with my supervisor. When discussing this, she stated that these results are true as I am always focused on accomplishing goals than building relationships within my surroundings. Not that it is all bad but building that relationship is important too. She also stated that it’s all about having a balance with completing task and building relationships. (L.
