Research Question: What are the nurse managers lived experience with upward violence in the healthcare setting?

Approach: Qualitative Phenomenology utilizing semi-structured open-ended questions

Sampling Plan: Is to perform a purposeful sampling of 12 nurse managers with at least two years or more experience that has experienced upward violence within healthcare settings.

Key elements of data analysis

Patton (2015) outlined a 12-step approach for ensuring that data analysis has a consistent approach. During my interviews I took field notes that could be themes or meaning information. As I reviewed my interview results, I reflected on the field notes to identify a connection to my chosen framework. I organized my interview to outline with the bullying framework however I was able to see some inconsistencies in my interview questions and framework alignment. I had to keep in my what my research objectives were however this was challenging because the questions were not experienced by my volunteer participants.

The software analysis system, NVIVO that I chose is the least complex of the three that I have tried yet I still find it extremely challenging to navigate the many tools provided. The coding data that I abstracted still requires a great deal of scrubbing however for the sake of time, I identified some basic patterns and codes (Please see attached document). Patton (2015) provided a variety of ways that data can be organized, and I believe that I will utilize thematic analysis or question by question for my dissertation. I remained reflexive during and after the interview especially since I was attempting to adapt the questions to meet my participants level of experience and to ensure that I was not biased in my attempt to draw meaningful data. Lastly, I maintained a form of journal to jot down my thoughts, opinions and how I wanted to perform my future research interviews. I found that a couple of my questions were redundant but was not able to see this until I was receiving duplicate answers. Practicing interviews is a significant key component to research because it can help identify strengths and weaknesses in obtaining meaningful rich data.
